Being designers we usually need more than just the usual font collection. Many typefaces are made available online for free it can be very helpful for designers to build up their type arsenal. Of course many would argue that designers should avoid using free grungy typefaces and instead apply type treatment to existing and well designed typefaces like Helvetica, Trebuchet, Georgia, H&FJ, and others.
Using the right font in your logo design is vital. It represents your company on all your business promotional items so it must be appropriate, professional, and most importantly: legible.
That’s why today we have a collection of 50 free professional free fonts, we’re not talking about grunge fonts or ones that have a distressed look, we’re talking about great looking professional typefaces made available for free online. I hope you enjoy this collection!

A really great collection of useful fonts. Some of them were already in my favourites collection, but that you for introducing such amazing typographies like Diavlo or Quadranta (really surprising lines).
And I completely agree with you about using such professional fonts as a starting point for logos and then applying treatment. There is a growing trend of people picking grunge fonts for logos and leaving them as the default fonts, which is a really discouraged practice for logo design. You really need to apply type treatment to the font! Your corporate identity has to be really unique, and so, your font needs to be unique as well!

Definitely agree. Looks like Diavlo is a favourite for everybody!!
Sometimes, the logos I love best is when I can deduce the base font and then take humble little smiles at the changes I can notice…

Some very nice fonts, thanks for putting this together. I noticed, however, that not all of the fonts are free for commercial use (some require a “donation” to the author) – it would have been nice to have some indication in the list of any limitations, etc. without having to click through each one to find license information.

Excellent resources to reference! Thank you for researching these and posting them.
Another fantastic typography site / forum to find exclusive / new and foundry fonts is http://www.pilo.me
It is by far the best private typography forum for graphic designers / typographers on the internet with an unbelievable amount of free fonts, premium fonts and exclusive typefaces. I believe it is an invite only site, similar to ffffound and behance, but a little more homegrown, personal and underground, but the content they have available is amazing. I also think it was just voted the best typography forum of 2009. Anyhow, check it out if you want, pilo.me
Thank you again for the excellent information, long time reader first time poster. I will definitely be bookmarking this!

What a fine list of selected fonts.
I tried some of these fonts already. I most cases it the font size is important for a font to look great.
Thanks for collecting and sharing this list with us.

I would say that the best reason to not use free fonts or pretty much any font on dafont.com is because they don’t have the full or even a good range of characters apart from alphanumeric. Some of them don’t even have punctuation!
The whole grunge thing.. i agree with the treatment thing, but if you’re looking for a branding font, never use a free one (unless it’s only free for a limited time). It’ll catch you out when you can’t use it for everything your branding needs – flexibility being one major thing.
Many of these are missing major characters – the dafont.com ones i believe.

Not to mention no variety of weights.
Anyway, that’s my rant.
