Should your website have a client list? This is a question that a client popped to me not long ago. That got me thinking.. is it a necessity or a bit of self indulgent showy-off-ness?
I then asked some of my previous clients about what they looked for when they selected Acuity Designs for their project; ‘who I had previously worked with’ was as high up on their list for many as ’standard of work’.
In general, the majority wanted not only to see who they wwere as in company names, but also whether we had worked with clients similar to themselves in the past. A client list is great in that it helps to position yourself within certain key markets and show off a bit of expertise. That got me wondering, whether rather than just the list I have now, – maybe I should be ordering the client list by industry / size of company / work done?
Some have said that posting a client list, lets your competitors know who your doing work for – which in our industry – I can’t see a huge drawback or disadvantage that that poses?
What do you think, should every design site have a client list for potential clients to peruse?
Yeah, I believe that a client list is very important, imagine a client and who has a list of designers, which one would he choose? The one with amazing website who’s got no list, or the one with normal site who designed for NIKE, he’ll say “NIKE knows better”, so he’ll choose The Nike guy! =D

Hi Bahy,
Thats what I definitely think now – do you think you should put up every client you have done work for? Or be selective?

Bahy M. AliReply:
Not all clients, one should try to filter clients so he doesn’t get any point against him, like let’s say a Website for a certain political view, some religion, things that can be disagreed with, also those sites which are overly controlled by the employer that one disagrees with, he should try to make his list as neutral, bright and himself as he can, that’s how I see it.
and a small note from the client on how creative and flexible the designer is, leaves a GREAT impression!

Great advice Bahy, think part of who you include in your publicised list needs to be common sense. i.e ‘how will potential leads feel when they see this company listed here’
Yes. Client-list give you better value!

better value Kiko? in what sense?

Better value: a client is a potential testimonial. Testimonial of what? Of your work, of your imagine. So a client is important to give your work a better value, a better imagine.

Very good article!
I also think that client lists are very important if your company is not well known like – let’s say BMW. The potential customer needs to see if the work you will be doing is professional and meets their needs.
Thanks for sharing!

No probs, glad it was useful – I think the overwhelming answer is yes! especially like you say if your still relatively unknown to most.

including one is an easy way for people to see who you’ve worked with, but I find that it also gives employers a chance to see a person’s experience and work history at a glance without having to ask for a full CV.
