I would say that the best reason to not use free fonts or pretty much any font on dafont.com is because they don’t have the full or even a good range of characters apart from alphanumeric. Some of them don’t even have punctuation!

The whole grunge thing.. i agree with the treatment thing, but if you’re looking for a branding font, never use a free one (unless it’s only free for a limited time). It’ll catch you out when you can’t use it for everything your branding needs – flexibility being one major thing.

Many of these are missing major characters – the dafont.com ones i believe.
