A Good Work Environment

I personally have never paid attention in detail to the space that I use to design in and how it can have an impact negatively or positively on the work i produce and how much of I produce…

The space I use is often in a state of ‘organised chaos’ full of everything from text-books from university, plates, rubbish, video games, wires and all sorts of extra irrelevant clutter. I took the time to one day, clean out everything and I felt so much more ‘interested’ and ‘inspired’ in getting down to do all the client work I had waiting.

So now, I’ve come to think that certain things are essential to a ‘good’ work environment. Although, some of you, as I used to , will insist your mess is a good work area for you personally; consider the following:

Firstly, your work area needs to be comfortable and appropriate to your tasks. When I was done re-organising, I found myself spending twice as long designing before I felt tired or the lure of my Playstation 3 took its hold. By simply, making the area less impeding and of greater comfort, my productivity definently increased.

Another thing I did, was try and move as many distractions as I could away from my design area. So I set up my HDTV and PS3 on the other side of my room; tidied away my Ipod etc; all away from my work area, so that I felt less tempted to ‘take a 5 minute break.’ I then proceeded to give the whole area good clean, and I definently feel a lot more focused, comfortable and ‘professional’ in my space.

Some other things to consider are for example the lighting. Having a good light source is essential, natural is preferable, just to reduce stress and decrease you having to strain on what your doing. I had to find a good balance at night between my light and the brightness of my monitor. Linked to lighting aswell, is temperature; try find a range that is comfortable at all times of the day for what you need to do.

Pretty basic stuff really, but its a big difference when you actually take the time to think about it and then go about making a more conjusive work environment.
